Wadi Halfa ( after 3 days) day 38
This northern most town of Sudan is the only border post open with Egypt . The only way to enter is via the ferry from Aswan on Lake Nasser. The town has four cafes, numerous tea stops run by Sudanese ladies , a government immigration centre and of course a mosque. There are two weekly events that make this town tick. The arrival and departure of the ferry. Between this we found an Italian who had put his Land Rover on the barge which follows the ferry. He had thought he would be able to persuade the authorities to let him travel with is car despite having been told it was not allowed. He like us was staying in the best of the 7 hotels at $5.00 per night . No working shower and a communal lavatory which had no running water. There was no other option. A typical African small town. Tow moneychangers would occasional talk to us otherwise unlike Egypt no sales pitches. The Sudanese seem very laid back. There is a local bus service used by overlanders who want to see things or an over night bus to Kharthoum which takes 12 hours.
We were told this morning our car has arrived and now we must clear it through customs. if we do not do this by 5 pm we will be here till Sunday as everything shuts for the weekend tomorrow.
